SiLaSpaCe presented at the 7th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion (WCPEC-7) 2018

Dr. Charlotte Weiss, working for Fraunhofer ISE in Freiburg, was awarded with the „Best poster award“ at the 7th World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion (WCPEC-7) in Waikoloa, Hawaii. An expert jury from the WCPEC judged the results of the scientists. Three results per session and topic were being shortlisted. The final presentation in front of the jury was crucial for winning the award.

Winner of the category “Space PV Techonologies” was Dr. Charlotte Weiss with her contribution “Potential Analysis of a Rear-Side Passivation for Multi-Junction Space Solar Cells based on Germanium Substrates”. To increase the current in space solar cells, her team developed an innovative Ge backside passivation and, furthermore, investigated its behaviour under working conditions in space (electron and proton irradiation). These results were used to simulate the upcoming space solar cells and demonstrated the potential to significantly increase its current up to an electron flux of 3x1014 e-/cm2. Using a 4-junction solar cell. An increase in cell efficiency of two to four percent is definitely possible.

During the “World Conference on Photovoltaic Energy Conversion”, which is proceeded in a four years circle, three of the most important photovoltaic-conferences take place: the Photovoltaic Science and Engineering Conference (PVSEC), the European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference (EU PVSEC) and the IEEE Photovoltaic Specialist Conference (IEEE PVSC). More than 600 research institutes from 60 countries were represented with more than 1250 presentations.
